Carra hoping for more midfield opportunities

Carragher played 45 minutes against Hungary as a defensive midfielder before being moved to right-back to cover the injured Gary Neville at half time.

Carragher says he enjoyed playing in midfield and hopes he impressed Sven Goran Eriksson enough for the Swede to give him another go in that position.

"I was made up the opportunity was given to me and I was happy with how it went," he said.

"The only disappointment was I didn't get a bit longer in there, but that couldn't be helped because of the injury to Gary Neville. It would be nice to have another go in there, but I think Neville's got a bit of a knock so maybe I'll be back at right back over the weekend.

"Midfield is a position I've not played for a while, but the manager used me there in training a day before the game and it went well. I've played with Didi Hamann for years now and he's a master in the position, so I've learnt a lot from him.

"I actually spoke to Didi an hour before last night's game and I'll be on the phone all the time to him in Germany. There would be no-one better to get advice from on playing holding midfield than him.

"I know there are others who can play the position and the English press can be very influential when it comes to deciding who should play there. But I'm not worried what they're saying about who should be there. I'm just concerned about doing my best for the side and the manager.

"I thought it worked well with Stevie pushing further forward. He was excellent last night, scoring and winning a pen."
