The experienced defender spoke of the necessity for Liverpool to do well in the competition, in order to allow Rafa Benitez greater spending come the January transfer window.

Carragher said: "I don't know if all the lads think about what winning will mean for the club in terms of earning money for the manager, but speaking personally I know how important it is for us to get through to the last 16."

But whilst an increase in revenue would be advantageous, Carra did not overlook the impact the clubs continuation into the last 16 of the Cahmpions League would have on possible purchases.

He added: "If we can win more money it means the manager will have more to spend on quality players in January. And the further we go in the Champions League, the more class players will want to join us."
