Carragher defends Owen decision

The Reds refused to match Newcastle's £16m bid for the Real Madrid striker, but Carragher believes Benitez did the right thing.

"I'm not sure if there will be a bit of criticism because we haven't signed him but we've spent a lot of money on strikers," he said. "It's about what's right for the club and the manager wants a central defender and a right midfielder.

"We've got a French international and a Spanish international, and probably Peter Crouch would have been in the England squad if he'd been fit.

"So that shows we have the players to do the damage up front and hopefully in a few more games we'll show that."
