The 25-year-old will miss the majority of the Reds campaign after suffering at the hands of a reckless Lucas Neill challenge and he admits that he may struggle to regain his regular place in the side once he is finally fit.
Carragher said: "What worries you most when this happens is losing your place. That's why I have always been prepared to play even when I've had a niggle. At a club like Liverpool you never want to miss a single game because it's tough to get back in. What makes it even harder is the team is starting to play really well and it's a great time to be in the side.
"When you get something as bad as this there's nothing you can do about it except listen to the advice from the doctors and not rush back until everything's sorted.
"I am going to miss going into training and having a laugh with the lads but I'm sure Milan and I will be pushing each other and helping each other.
"I went to the hospital thinking that, at worst, I would be out for three or four weeks. The next thing I know I've been told my leg's broken and it's going to be more like six months. I couldn't believe it.
"I am sick as I have had such a good record with injuries and this is a new experience for me. I had a knee operation a few years ago but that was over the summer and I hardly missed any matches. Obviously it's going to be a lot different this time."
