Carragher hungry for Terry's role

The uncompromising Anfield defender looks likely to replace the ailing Terry at the heart of the England defence if the Chelsea man fails to win his battle for fitness in the days to come.

England colleagues Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell may have remained tight-lipped over Terry's hopes at a press conference today, but the sight of the 23-year-old's heavily-bandaged leg spoke volumes about his chances of facing Thierry Henry in Portugal.

An impressive showing against Iceland last weekend means Carragher is favourite to play alongside Sol Campbell in Terry's hamstring strain does rule him out, and the Bootle-born player is eager to prove his worth to an England public that remains wary of his quality at the highest level.

"I was glad to get most of the game against Iceland. A couple of us never played in the Japan match which we would have liked to.

"The Iceland match showed the lads are hungry and the ones who came off the bench are desperate to get in the starting line-up."

Carragher may have spent much of his career filling both fullback positions at Anfield, but he is more than happy to prove his capabilities in the central defensive position that many feel is his true talent.

He added: "So be it, as long as I am in the team, that's the important thing."
