Carragher: No excuses

A spirited second half fightback so nearly yielded a place in Friday morning's draw, but in the end the Reds fell one goal short of qualification.

But now the defender says Liverpool will concentrate on the UEFA Cup, and try their best to repeat the performamances of two years ago when the Reds triumphed in the Westfalonstadion in Dortmund to lift the trophy.

"We're not going to make excuses. We know what's going to come our way over the next few days and we'll just have to accept it. For a club of our size to go out at this stage is disappointing. Now we have to show our strength and character.

"Last year we were in a similar situation when we beat Dortmund in the last group game and they went on to reach the UEFA Cup Final. We've got to think that's what we've got to do.

"I will look forward to the UEFA Cup and won't see it as a poor consolation. The last time we were in it we won it and had some great nights.

"Personally, I'd rather win the UEFA Cup then get beaten in the Champions ' League quarter-final.

"We were better in the second half but you can't disguise the fact we were poor in the first.

"We let ourselves down, especially in the first half. It was a great comeback but we can't get away from what happened.

"I wouldn't say it was the worst we've played, but it certainly wasn't great. It was strange. Every time they had a shot they seemed to score.

"They had a few breaks as well but I think we should have used our heads more.

"After we conceded the first goal we started to chase the game straight away instead of realising we still had 90 minutes to get back. That cost us.

"Had it still been 1-0 at half time, we had the strikers to score the goals we needed.

"Instead we lost our shape. Maybe a draw was a fair result.

"In the last minute John Arne Riise put in a good free kick and we were hoping it might have fallen to one of the lads but it wasn't to be.

"We don't normally defend like that and it doesn't make us a bad side because it's happened in this game.

"Yes, we're disappointed to have conceded three goals but maybe it was because we chased the game too soon.

"All we can do is give them credit and make sure we bounce back."
