The 25-year-old Bootle-born defender admits that he was far from his best in the pre-season event of 2001, but he is determined that both he and the club will perform better on this occasion.
"It's a great tournament to be in, probably the best pre-season event in Europe," he told the club's official site. "It's very prestigious so we want to give a good account of ourselves.
"I can only speak for myself, but I don't feel tired after the Hong Kong trip at all. The gaffer gave us all a few days off so we've re-charged and we're ready to go again."
