The Liverpool defender, born in the district of Bootle, knows as much as anyone how important Liverpool-Manchester United games are to the fans of both clubs. That this particular meeting is for the Worthington Cup will only add to the atmosphere.

Carragher said: "As a local lad I know how much it means. Since United beat Blackburn in their semi-final everyone has been talking about beating them in the final. People have been coming up to me in the street and the demand for tickets has been immense.

"It's probably the same for their players because United have a load of local lads in their team as well. Alex Ferguson said Liverpool is Manchester United's biggest game and vice versa. There is no bigger fixture in this country."
