Liverpool defender Carragher will miss England's friendly against Holland next month, which marks the beginning of Sven Goran Eriksson's process of whittling down his squad to a final tournament party of 23, because he will be suspended after being sent off on Sunday.

He could also be ruled out of the remaining two friendlies against Italy and Paraguay after police last night began an investigation into the Highbury incident.

Chelsea's John Terry and Leeds United's Jonathan Woodgate are already on the list of players unavailable to Eriksson during the critical build-up period before the World Cup because they are facing criminal proceedings or serving a court sentence.

Eriksson's plans for the match in Holland are in confusion as Martin Keown will also be unavailable - and Danny Mills could be, too.

Carragher, who hoped to force his way into the final squad as one of the few left-sided players available, will be automatically ruled out of the trip to Amsterdam under the FA's new policy of refusing to select for friendly internationals players serving suspensions.

The police probe into the coin-throwing incident will delay a decision over whether there will be extra FA action on top of Carragher's three-match ban for his instant red card.
