Anfield assistant boss Phil Thompson is standing by the England international, despite a barrage of criticism over the coin-throwing incident against Arsenal at Highbury on Sunday.

He believes the full-back's punishment - a three-game ban for the red card issued by referee Mike Riley - is sufficient, without adding any further sanctions.

Thompson said: "Mentally Jamie's OK and there's no problem with him playing. He's a great character, and even after what happened, I'm quite sure he will get great support from our crowd.

"That's what he needs at the moment, and it should help him with the game being at Anfield, because when problems like this come along, the fans usually rally round.

"They know we have got to stick together, and that is what we are doing with Jamie.

"He showed great courage in apologising as quickly as he did and he should be commended for that.

"He needs the support of the fans, and from a performance side of things, it could bring the best out of him."
