Cheyrou on stand by

The French midfielder is determined to improve on last season's performance and the absence of Hamann and Gerrard, who is suspended, could be the chance he needs.

"All I do know is if I play my best football and do the job expected of me I will play a lot more games," he said. "I can help Liverpool win more titles but to do that I have to reach my best level. Then it can be a good season for me."

Gerard Houllier has already hinted that he will rely on his squad rather than bring in any more new faces.

"Didi's injury is a blow for the player and the club," said the Liverpool boss. "Things like this show why it is important to have such a strong squad."
