The Frenchman has waited for two seasons for his move across the Channel and is confident the club can succeed under new boss Rafael Benitez.

"The nearer my move to Liverpool came the more excited I was getting," said the Frenchman. "I do think we can win the title next season - the new boss has the experience and he has won two Spanish titles in three years.

"Liverpool finished fourth last season and I know they have not won the title since 1990, but a new coach brings new ideas.

"I only know Rafa Benitez by his reputation but I realise he's a great coach. Valencia's results in the last few seasons speak hugely of his success. I hope we'll work well together and I'm sure we will.

"We are building a team here and that is what has attracted me to Anfield. When I first went there to see the facilities I was shocked - in a good way.

"The moment I am most looking forward is my first game in the red shirt. Two years ago I played at Anfield with Auxerre in the UEFA Cup. The crowd knew I was negotiating with Liverpool and gave me a fabulous welcome. I still get goose-bumps when I think about it. I can't wait to go back there with the fans singing my name.

"Of course it would have been nice to be playing under the man who signed me, but I know the new coach wanted me as well. I felt for Houllier when I heard he had been sacked — right from the start negotiations had always been with him, but that's the way football goes."
