The Toxteth-born forward, a prolific scorer of 170 goals during his time on Merseyside, hauled his side level after Vladimir Smicer and Dietmar Hamann had cancelled out Nicolas Anelka's penalty to give Gerard Houllier's side a 2-1 lead.
The point leaves the Champions League-chasing Reds in sixth position in the Premiership table, four points behind fourth-placed Charlton with a valuable game in hand.
