Clemence has worked with Carson in his capacity as England goalkeeper coach and believes that the 19 year old would have no problems coping if given his first team debut by Rafael Benitez.

"I was younger than Scott when I came to Liverpool from Scunthorpe," said Clemence.

"I was 18 when I had my first game in the first team. At Leeds, Neil Sullivan has been doing so well that Scott has been restricted to sitting on the bench.

"We've known about him for a long time and he's definitely got lots of natural ability and he is certainly highly regarded by us.

"It will be a big step for him. What he needs now is to play games."
