Contract talks for Owen

Owen, who earns approximately £3 million per season including bonuses, has two years remaining on his current contract with a further year's option, but Houllier is determined to extend that.

"The board know what I think about him," said Houllier. "He's star material, our talisman. Talks will happen in due time.

"I and the club would like him to stay for as long as possible. Not only is he an outstanding player, he's grown up as an outstanding man."

Since Steve McManaman's departure on a free transfer to Real Madrid three years ago the club have sought to extend contracts at least two years before expiry.
