The Frenchman joined Liverpool in July 2001 but has been forced to resign for family reasons.

"It's been a very difficult decision for me to make, but after long talks with Gerard Houllier, I will be leaving the club this week for family reasons," he admitted.

"The number of games we play has made it very difficult for me to spend enough time with my family in France and after two years on Merseyside I'm looking forward to a return to a more normal family routine.

"Having spent two years here I've come to appreciate just how special the fans are, supporting the club through the good times as well as the more difficult periods. They have been magnificent and I hope that they are rewarded with the return of the Championship to Anfield as soon as possible."
