Crouch defends penalty takers

Owen Hargreaves was the only England player to successfully bury his spot kick, with Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all seeing their penalties saved. However, Peter Crouch was quick to leap to their defence.

"We've been criticised in the past for not practicing penalties, but I can assure you that has not been the case over the past month. The boys worked so hard with 10 men that everyone was exhausted when it came to the shoot-out and it showed," said the Liverpool striker.

"I feel devastated. A few of the lads were inconsolable. We thought we could go all the way but to go out on penalties again is a bitter blow. It was always going to be difficult being down to 10 men but I felt it was within us to win the game. But penalties are a lottery and we came unstuck again."
