Crouch scores but England flop

England threw away their Euro 2008 qualification hopes by losing 3-2 at home to Croatia last night. They have failed to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since 1994.

Israel handed England a huge lifeline by beating Russia on Saturday which meant Steve McClaren's side had only to avoid defeat last night to book their place in the finals. However, they were undone after only 14 minutes.

Scott Carson fumbled a simple chance after eight minutes to put England under pressure and then Wayne Bridge dawdled in defence, keeping the Russian attack onside and allowing Ivica Olic to race through, round Carson and slot home for 2-0 after forteen minutes.

England were abysmal but somehow managed to drag themselves level in the second half. Firstly Frank Lampard scored from the spot and then Peter Crouch brilliantly brought a David Beckham cross down on his chest before volleying home the equaliser.

With the scores level again England were going through, however they failed to close down subsitute Mladen Petric and he blasted home the winner from 25 yards and broke English hearts.
