"It's an important game for the players, the fans and everyone with an interest in either club," he said. "Both teams always want to win. There's city pride at stake and whoever wins has the upper hand until the next meeting comes around.

"No disrespect to the foreigners, because they want to win every match they play, but it matters most to the Steven Gerrards, Danny Murphys and Michael Owens because they are local boys.

"But the fact the foreigners are less caught up in the whole occasion often means they prove to be the match-winners because they just play their own games.

"Gerard Houllier will ensure every one of his players are ready for that first whistle, and if Liverpool play to their best right through the team then they are capable of getting a very positive result."
