Jack Rodwell's sending off in the 23rd minute by referee Martin Atkinson looked extremely harsh after he won the ball before making contact with Luis Suarez in the follow through.

But Liverpool took full advantage by gradually wearing down Everton's resistance and taking the three points courtesy of second-half goals from Andy Carroll and Suarez.

"I think up until they lost a man it was even," Dalgish told Sky Sports 1. "I don't think there was much between the teams.

"Sometimes the extra man works against you and sometimes it works in your favour. We kept our patience and we are delighted with the result.

"Whether we would have won if they had not lost a man we don't know."

Asked if he felt Rodwell's dismissal had been harsh, Dalglish replied: "I don't know. I haven't seen it (a replay)."

Preferring to concentrate on his side's performance, Dalglish added: "Everybody did very well. Andy is off the mark with a league goal which is good for us. Dirk missed a penalty but didn't let it affect him and Luis gets another one."

Suarez was happy for Carroll. He said: "As a striker every time you try to score. Today I am happy for Andy as well."
