The Charlton midfielder is in good form at the moment and has a point to prove to Rafael Benitez, who offloaded him at the start of the season.
"I was upset to leave Liverpool at the time, I don't mind admitting that. It was something I didn't expect," he said.
"I thought about fighting for my place, long and hard. But I came to the conclusion that do I want to playing under a manager that doesn't have 100 per cent confidence or belief in me.
"But that's football. I try to focus on the positives of what I did contribute at Anfield over those years and I think's that's generally good.
"Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't regret leaving. I feel now at Charlton I'm near my best again. Not quite where I want to be, but not far off.
"I feel physically I'm at my best, mentally I feel settled - and I'm settled off the pitch."
