Liverpool defender Abel Xavier will miss Portugal's first World Cup game against the United States after a scan on his injured thigh revealed he has a slight rupture.

Xavier sustained the injury during training yesterday and will be out of action for anything up to 10 days.

"He will be out for eight to ten days," confirmed Portugal's team doctor Henrique Jones.

"We will do everything we possibly can to speed up his recovery. Nonetheless, I can definitely say that Abel will not be fit for the first game against the United States."
