Diao: I'll repay Houllier faith

Diao, purchased for £5m from French club Sedan, has been branded a flop by fans and critics alike. The player, though, believes the fans will see his best form now that it is most needed.

Diao told the clubs official website: “At any other club I think there would have been problems within the squad if there had been a run like this, but at Liverpool we stay together and there is a real bonding among all the lads.

“The boss has supported us all the way and has shown a tremendous amount of trust. He believes in us and he told us that again after the Aston Villa game.

“He said we must continue to stick together. That togetherness is one of the biggest qualities in our squad.”

"Of course we’re all down at the moment. Things aren’t going our way and we feel very frustrated, but there is a real togetherness in the squad and we are mentally very strong.

“That will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season and for the future.

“The time has now come for us to repay the boss. We don’t go from being one of the best sides in the league to one of the worst in a couple of months.

“We’ve got a free week now to work hard on the training pitch. We are all desperate to get back to winning ways – hopefully starting next weekend at Southampton.”
