Diao's that

Houllier's decision to bring the Senegal international to Anfield immediately, rather then wait until December, has proved to be an inspired one. After making a difficult start as a make-shift centre-back he has revelled in his midfield role. Houllier is clearly happy with the start made by Diao:

"What I like about Salif is you can see how much he loves the game and likes playing,"

"A lot of people have commented how impressed they have been with him since he broke into the team. He could have joined the Senegal squad this week to play in a friendly with South Africa but he said he wanted to stay at Liverpool to prepare for the game with Fulham."

"The good thing for us is Salif joined us earlier than we expected because originally he wasn't due until December. Once we knew we could get him here we did it sooner and I must say I'm very pleased with his performances so far."

"He is a modern, defensive midfielder. He is similar to Steven Gerrard in that respect because they both have more qualities than just being defensive."

"We decided to bring him early because at the time Steven Gerrard was injured and we weren't sure how Didi would be because he played in every game during the World Cup."

"All the signings I made during the summer will deliver. I promise that. I think it's been a bit easier for Salif to adapt into English football because he is so strong and has the physical presence which is suited to the Premiership."
