The former Bayern Munich and Tottenham striker, who replaced Rudi Voeller following Germany's failure at Euro 2004, insists that there is still a place for the 30-year-old Reds star in his thinking.

Hamann confirmed Klinsmann's reasons for not picking him for the clash, saying: " "I wouldn't say it hurt to be left out because I was prepared for it. The manager phoned me up and told me what his plans were, that he was leaving me out to try a few different things in the friendly games, and that is fine by me.

"The last time I spoke to the manager he said he was going to come over to Liverpool and watch me play and we left it at that.

"At the moment I want to concentrate on Liverpool but I certainly haven't retired from international football."
