The former Bayern Munich midfielder joined Liverpool from Newcastle for £8m in the summer of 1999 and has played a key role in Gerard Houllier's plans to improve the club.
Although he has only scored 10 times for the Reds, three of those goals have come this season as the team have developed a more attacking approach to the game.
