Diomede: I deserved a chance

The French international, who holds a World Cup winners medal from France's success in 1998, cannot understand why he was unable to make an impact on Merseyside.

He said: "I have asked myself this question 100 times but I still don't know why. Perhaps one day I will say something but at the moment I prefer to close the subject. I only want to think of the present.

"The future will tell me whether this experience has enriched me or unsettled me. The confidence is still there. If I had lost it, then I would certainly have stopped. I don't think I've got anything to reproach myself about. I didn't short-change anyone.

"I got up every morning to work. I worked. I didn't want people to say what an easy life I had and that I was just at Liverpool to pick up the money.

"Sometimes it was hard and I got angry. I think I deserved to be given a chance, but I don't know why I wasn't."
