Diouf sees the light

After several high profile spitting incidents, both at Liverpool and at Bolton, the Senegalese winger has launched a charm offensive.

Last week he helped supervise training sessions for Bolton's youth sides and, following the FA Cup win at Ipswich, went over to the disabled section to hand his shirt to a young Ipswich fan.

"I wasn't aware of the culture of spitting in England," he admitted. "In France, its more serious if you thump someone.

"Now I realise what I've done you won't see me doing it again."

Diouf is also realistic about the chances of returning to Liverpool when his loan spell with Bolton ends, after the arrival of Rafael Benitez.

"It seemed that he already had an image of me when he arrived, before he had time to judge me," he said. "At Liverpool I don't think I received the same respect that I'm now getting at Bolton. It was a difficult two years for me.

"The atmosphere between the foreign and English players wasn't always great. It was difficult with Gerard Houllier because I never knew where I was at the club. I didn't feel he had confidence in me.

"I don't know what the future holds - that is between Liverpool and Bolton - but I still have some good friends at Liverpool.

"When it was my birthday last week Steven Gerrard rang me to wish me all the best and the chairman has passed on his wishes."
