Dirk aiming for early qualification

The Reds left themselves a mountain to climb last season when they only picked up one point from nine in their first three games. Although they won the next three, scoring sixteen goals and conceding only one, it was a big scare. This season Liverpool are aiming to progress without so much trouble.

"We did talk about not making the same mistakes as last year before the Marseille game," said Kuyt.

"You don't want to play games in the group stages like we did last year. You want to get to the next round as quickly as possible.

"We overcame a massive obstacle in beating Marseille on their own pitch but we know we could still have problems if we don't beat PSV. We have to focus on PSV and remember that last year we were beaten at home by Marseille.

"There are no easy opponents in our group so we have to make sure we get the points really early."
