The young Frenchman looked unlikely to break back in the first team after being hauled off after 45 minutes of an embarrassing personal display against Auxerre. Henchoz's unfortunate injury, though, has handed the 22-year-old a chance to shine in his favoured position.

Traore said: "The manager knows he can rely on me and he knows I will always give 100 per cent for the team.

"I've played at both centre back and left back this season and I feel I have done a good job. If I get another chance between now and the end of the season then I'll do all I can to do well.

"Sami and Stephane are top class defenders and I know it's going to be hard to replace either of them when they're fit, but you never know what's around the corner in football or when your next chance is going to come along.

"I have enjoyed my time in the first team this season. I have played more games than I expected and hopefully there will be more to come before the season is finished."
