"The last couple of years were the best times I had there," he said. "I thought that I left as I was maturing as a player.
"It was a great learning curve - a good experience. I can always look back on it as being a good time but obviously I feel I played better football once I left the club."
Now skipper at Leeds, Matteo is modest about his game, but admits he loves his job.
"Throughout my career I don't think I've had much recognition and that is fair enough. Maybe I don't deserve it.
"I just get on with things, get on with my job and I enjoy it."
