Dudek: I play for my passion of the game

Dudek, who signed from Feyenoord last season for £4.85m , signed a new deal with the Reds last week, but the Pole says it's not the money keeping him at Anfield but his passion for the game.

"I play for my love of the game, not for the money. I joined Liverpool because I want to win trophies for the club more than anything, not because I wanted money. It's important I say this. I've never been the kind of person who goes searching for money wherever I go.

"I'm very satisfied with my quality of life. My family and work is the most important thing to me. Money's not the motivation when I'm playing. As a footballer you know when you play well, the rewards will come your way.

"It was very satisfying for me that Liverpool wanted to keep me for longer. It shows they trust me."

And the keeper admitted that the lack of press coverage for Liverpool, despite going top on the league on Saturday, has helped motivate the Reds as they chase their nineteenth title.

"People are always talking about Arsenal and Manchester United. Noone has spoken about Liverpool winning the Premiership or going far in the Champions' League," said Dudek.

"But that gives us the motivation we need to do even better. We are confident and at the same time don't feel under pressure. As the season progresses I think you will see we will gradually become the team everyone is talking about. We are top of the league now, so we're just waiting for the attention to start.

"When you want to be successful, it's better to reach the top in small steps. Every game for us recently has been like a tug of war or some kind of wrestling match. We've been pulling and pulling our opponents to put them to the ground, but each battle has been like a long fight, a tough struggle for victory up until the final minute.

"When football is like this, you know if you let your head down or stop concentrating for just a second, the opposition will pull you to the floor instead. The way we are winning games shows how we can battle and this is why we are proving we can win something this season." In the aftermath of an indifferent World Cup, there were fears Dudek's form could dip at the start of this season.

I remembered my experience when I first joined Feyenoord and it helped me by the time I joined Liverpool.

"My first season in Holland was really difficult. I was young, alone and without my family at first. My wife was pregnant and before my boy was born I had so many things going on in my head it was difficult to think about football.

"I learned hard lessons about life during that time and I told myself if I fulfil my dream and go to England the same problems I had settling down in Dutch football wouldn't be repeated. Everything had to be right off the field and then things would be okay on it.

"It was also easier for me at Liverpool because my team mates helped me as soon as I arrived and they are still helping me now. We have a fantastic group of players here so when I came here I felt it was like joining a family.

"I've never had to worry about anything but football since I moved to Liverpool. I knew straight away this is where my future would be and after my first month when my wife and little boy arrived I felt at home.

"Everything is right here. All I need to do is focus on my work and our games."
