Eager Kirkland happy to play for free

The former Coventry man would surely have replaced David James in the England goal against Poland if it were not for a series of injury setbacks, and the Reds shot-stopper admits to great frustration at his plight.

Kirkland, speaking to the club's official website, said: "All I want to do, in fact all I have ever wanted to do, is to play for Liverpool. I'd even say I'd play for free if it meant I could stay injury free. If someone said to me I would have no injuries if I didn't get paid then I'd take it, without a doubt.

"I've had a lot of bad luck. I don't know what I did in a previous life but I must have upset somebody!

"Over the last couple of weeks I've been really down and low, especially after reading a couple of things about me in the papers. But I'm a strong character and I'll bounce back. I'll prove people wrong. And when I do then nobody will be happier about it than me."
