Egg-chasers poke fun at Diomede

Not the former Liverpool player, but a cockerel the French are using for a mascot during the tournament down under.

Named after the French winger, who played very little part in his country's 1998 World Cup success, Diomede is looked after by a different player each day.

Bernard Diomede (the footballer) is apparently none too happy about the lucky mascot being named after himself.

"At first I thought it was a joke," he said. "My first reaction was that before using someone's name they should ask.

"There aren't many Diomede's in the world. I've got a sense of humour, but I would have liked to have been told about it.

"It's less funny when you're the one concerned. I just hope all this won't disturb my family too much."

The latest news from down under is that Diomede has been sent back to his farm because he was feeling lonely.
