El Zhar hopes to start

El Zhar, who scored his only Liverpool goal in last season's Carling Cup campaign, hopes to start against Crewe tonight and impress Rafael Benitez ahead of the derby.

"The Carling Cup is a big opportunity for players who don't play a lot to show what they can do, especially for a young lad like me. I've had a little calf problem but I should be okay and hope to feature against Crewe," the winger told the club's official website.

"The derby is the biggest game of the season and everyone wants to be involved in it. If I play well against Crewe then hopefully the boss might involve me in the squad, but we have to concentrate on this game first.

"It has been a very good season so far for me. The boss has given me a chance and I've tried to do the right things on the pitch. Getting a chance in the first team has given me a lot of confidence, especially when I suffered an ankle problem in pre-season which meant I couldn't train properly.

"It's special to play at Anfield and it gives you an amazing feeling every time you step out onto the pitch. Every game is important and we want to win everything we are are involved in.

"We know this is like a final for Crewe but it is the same for us as well. Strange things can happen and we have to be at our best and just go and win the game."
