Hughes, nicknamed 'Crazy Horse' during his playing days, appeared before the beak yesterday, on his 55th birthday.
Not only was he banned for a year but he was fined £400 plus £55 costs and ordered to attend a drink driving rehabilitation course.
Police stopped Hughes last August shortly after he left York races where he had given an after-dinner speech.
The court heard that Hughes thought his brother was too ill to drive so he decided to drive "10 or 20 yards" down the road to his hotel.
Speaking outside the court yesterday, Hughes said: "I am absolutely disgusted with what I did. I abhor drink drivers."
