England hopes still alive

Israel's 2-1 win over Russia on Saturday means England only need a draw against Croatia on Wednesday to book their place at Euro 2008 to the relief of Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch.

"If we don't get there it will be so frustrating and we have to make sure we have the right mentality on Wednesday," said Gerrard.

"Since we lost the game in Russia it has been difficult to be an England player to be honest.

"To be in a situation where it's been out of our hands, and you are relying on other people, is not a situation you want to be in - and not a situation we should have been in.

"England want to be in the big tournaments and that's where we need to earn the right to be by getting the right result on Wednesday.

"Now we are going to be looking forward to one of the biggest games of our lives."

"We all know it would be a huge blow if we don't qualify but we have tried to stay positive," added Crouch.

"We've had to believe Israel could get a result, they've done that and now I think the atmosphere at Wembley on Wednesday will be fantastic and we will all want to be involved in the game.

"You want to be in charge of your own destiny and it's been frustrating that we've had to come down to waiting for another result for us to qualify.

"But we are where we are with our hopes back in our own hands and we have to play as well as we can and get the right result."
