England won't jeopardise Red's League challenge

Sven-Goran Eriksson will not jeopardise Liverpool and Manchester United's European campaigns by forcing their England players to play a full game against Italy this week.

Eriksson has gained the agreement of Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni to using 11 substitutes in the friendly.

So while the likes of David Beckham and Paul Scholes, as well as Emile Heskey and Michael Owen, could start the game, they will be taken off at half-time or shortly afterwards.

That attitude will extend to all of Eriksson's players, even though he does intend to give Ashley Cole 45 minutes' action against the wishes of Arsene Wenger.

Eriksson said: "Most of the players come from clubs who want to win the title or the Champions League, qualify for Europe or stay up.

"So we will stick to that rule whereby we change maybe all or most of the team at half-time. In the end, we win on that as well."
