Evans hails Hamann return

The 30-year-old German international made an impressive first start of the season in the hard-fought 1-0 win over Steaua Bucharest on Thursday, with his much-missed calming influence allowing Steven Gerrard to demonstrate his breathtaking range of abilities in both halves of the pitch.

Evanssaid: "Gerrard had a fantastic game, all over the pitch and I think it was the return of Hamann which gave Gerrard more freedom.

It's difficult to put it down to one man but he (Hamann) gives balance to the side, sitting in front of the back four. He's not a spectacular player, but the balance he gives is important.

"Liverpool are trying to add flair to their game and Didi is ideal for them, he can sit there and shield the defence."

Evans, who left the club in 1998 following an ill-fated spell as joint-manager alongside current Anfield incumbent Gerard Houllier, feels the Reds will focus on earning a Champions League place for next season, despite their continued progress in Europe's second-tier competition.

"I think they have got the quality to win the UEFA Cup, it's not the competition they would like to be in but if you're in it you might as well go on and win it.

"They want to be in the Champions League, nowadays that is the major competition, as the UEFA Cup has been devalued with four clubs going into the Champions League. They want to be back there next year.

"They've been inconsistent this year, one or two games have been lost which they should have won. But the League table doesn't lie, if they had played great stuff they would be at the top, but they played mediocre stuff and are down there in 9th place.

"They have got the ability to improve and hopefully they can."
