McAteer was released from his contract at Sunderland when they failed to regain promotion back to the Premiership, despite captaining the Mackems on occasion last season.

The move is seen as a coup for Leicester by Foxes manager Micky Adams: "Jason is a player who has operated at the top level and brings a wealth of experience to the club.

"He is an excellent player and we have had to beat off many other clubs for his signature."
