Fans bid farewell to Babbel

Last updated : 18 July 2004 By Kevin Smith
After playing his part in the treble season the German defender was struck down with the life-threatening Guillan Barre Syndrome, and missed almost all of the following season.

After losing his fitness level he also lost his place in the first team, and went to Blackburn Rovers on loan last season.

But Babbel has been a firm favourite among the Anfield faithful, and we all wish him success back in Germany.

Here's some comments from LFC Online's forum members:

Good luck Markus!! It was great seeing you in the red shirt.

What a pity illness robbed him of the best years of his career and us of a great player. Outstanding during the treble season and considering he was a free transfer, it was a great bit of business by GH.

Will always remember etra time in the UEFA cup final, he was running around as though it was the first five minutes. a great player who through illness was robbed of some good years. All the best to him, and thanks.

He was absolutely awesome in the glorious year of silver. Good luck Markus and thanks for all the memories.

Big Thanx to Marcus...and good luck with his move...no surprise our defence took a downturn when he was ill...be remembered with fondness...solid, loyal to the cause and ran his bollocks off...total professional...bye bye matey...(nearly brings a tear to the old eye!!)
