Ferguson dismayed by Houllier criticism

Ferguson, who was one of Houllier's first visitors when the Reds boss was recovering from major heart surgery, feels that his managerial rival has received unfair criticism in recent weeks.

Ferguson said: “I can’t understand the criticism Gerard has received over the past few weeks, particularly given the job he has done there.

“He has changed the whole culture of the club in such a short space of time and five trophies at any club should make you a fixture for life.

The Manchester United manager admits that he was concerned when Houllier returned to managemebt so soon after major surgery, but he understands the intense desire that drives the Frenchman.

“Everyone worries when you get an illness like that,” Ferguson said.

“The great thing is he came through it. He is a great football man and you have to be committed to manage a top club. Gerard obviously continues to see his life in the game.”

the obvious mutual respect between the two managers, though, will be cast aside this Sunday. Ferguson insists that his side are ready for the challenge that will be offered to them by Liverpool.

He said: “The last time we went two years without winning a trophy was 1989 and doing it again is not something I want to think about. This is a piece of silverware and we want to win it.

“I have always said that Manchester United against Liverpool is the biggest game for both clubs. It is not so much passion as importance.

“We have had some great games against them in the past and Sunday might be another.”
