Liverpool have agreed terms on a one year deal with Figo and were all set to sign the Portugese captain on a free transfer when Real Madrid suddenly slapped a £2m transfer fee on the player.

Madrid had come to an agreement with Figo that he could leave on a free transfer if a club came in for him and he has urged the Spanish runners-up to keep their word.

"I don't understand, if the club don't see me as part of their plans, why they won't let me go," said Figo.

"It's close but it's still up in the air and nothing has been finalised. It's my dream to play for Liverpool but dreams don't always come true, I am still waiting."
