Finnan fighting fit

Finnan's presence may have been somewhat overshadowed by the announcement of Harry Kewell's arrival at the club, but the Irishman knows he has an important role to play for the Reds next season.

Finnan said: "The history of this club appealed to me because I know what it has done in the past. In recent years they have won a lot of trophies.

"It's a dream move for me and I hope that playing alongside people like Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard as well as under the manager here can bring my game on considerably.

"I have been training here now for a week and a half and it's fine. I came back slightly earlier because of the groin strain I had at the end of last season but that hasn't been a problem and my overall fitness is pretty good.

"Our pre-season schedule is extremely busy as we travel to Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Asia and I am looking forward to it."
