Finnan: Gerrard blameless for own goal disappointment

The unlucky Reds captain sent a cross into his own net with only nine minutes of normal time left, but Finnan insisted that it was a mistake which anyone could have made.

"No-one said anything to Stevie about the own goal. It could have happened to anyone. He is a quality player and this sort of thing won't affect him," he said.

He added: "They have a lot of quality players, especially up front, and to be fair to them they probably deserved their goal. We didn't play as well in the second half and didn't keep the ball as we could have done."

However, Finnan remained upbeat, adding: "It's disappointing for the manager as well with it being his first Cup Final. But I'm sure we'll bounce back from this and come again in the future."
