Finnan happy to help Anfield attack

While forward-thinking Finnan has already won many admirers at Anfield for his fluent attacking style so rarely seen by his fellow defenders in Red in recent years, the 27-year-old Irishman is quick to argue that all of the Liverpool backline can help to build attacks.

Finnan said: "Liverpool aren't suddenly playing more from the back because I've arrived. There were a lot of top quality players here before I came - it's not as if they couldn't play out of the back.

"Hopefully I've added something different with my game. That is the way I've played over the last few years for Fulham, though this is now a different level. I've always been a full back who likes to push on. I'm a defender first and foremost but attack has always been a big part of my game.

"I want to improve on all of my game - attacking and defending. Having Christian Damiano at the club has helped. I didn't know too many of the players up here before I came, so to know he was coming here as well was another attraction. The players have taken to him. He works on the technical side of the game."
