Finnan hoping for luck of the Irish

Illustrious names such as Mark Lawrenson, Steve Heighway, Ronnie Whelan and John Aldridge have worn both the green of the Republic and the Red of Liverpool in the past, and Finnan knows only too well that he has joined an elite group by leaving Fulham for Anfield.

"There's been a lot of Irish players who have done very well here in the past and I'd like to continue that," said Finnan at a press conference largely dominated by fellow newcomer Harry Kewell.

"Hopefully I can be as successful as the others have been before me. I'm really looking forward to the challenge."
