Finnan ready to repay the faith

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international was brought to Anfield despite the Reds manager being aware of the player's need for a hernia operation that will rule him out of Sunday's Premiership curtain-raiser against Chelsea.

The former Fulham knows that many clubs would not have signed a player who was not at full fitness, and he is keen to prove his worth to Gerard Houllier and the Anfield faithful as soon as he an.

Finnan said: "I was disappointed not to start pre-season training with the other lads, but it has also showed the faith Liverpool have in my ability, given the fact that they signed me knowing I was injured and knowing I'd had an operation to rectify it.

"A lot of clubs would have waited until I'd had the corrective surgery and was playing again before they'd have brought me to their club. But Liverpool and Gerard Houllier didn't.

"That meant a great deal to me and I can't wait until the season starts now to try to repay that faith."
