Finnan: Win for Xabi

Alonso is now suspended for the second leg of the semi-final after Eider Gudjohnson dived to earn Xabi a yellow card. However, that piece of gamesmanship has made the Reds even more determined to beat Chelsea on Tuesday.

Finnan said: "We can do it for Xabi. We can give him the final to come back to.

"There were a few of us on yellow cards. It was just unlucky that it happened to him. It didn't look much like a yellow card, but we can give him the final to look forward to.

"Being without Xabi will be a big loss, but we have proved all season that when we have had big players missing we can still produce results.

"There is plenty of quality still around for us to us, even if it is very disappointing personally for him.

"It's a pity we didn't get an away goal, but it is still a good result and it could get us through. We certainly deserved a draw, at least.

"But we are happy enough to come away from Stamford Bridge and still be right in it for the second leg.

"I think the key was [Petr] Cech's save from Milan Baros, we all thought it was over him. It's all to play for now.

"This gives us a lot of belief and a clean sheet is always good for morale. The last few times we have played them have been pretty close and we certainly should have won at Anfield in the league, that is the inspiration for us because we know we were better than them that day.

"We know a lot about each other now, it was the fourth time we have played them this season and hopefully the next time we will come out on top.

"But we must not forget their quality, they are more than capable of going away to get a result and score goals, but we are at home and the fans will definitely be up for it with us just one game away from the final.

"The European nights have been great at Anfield, people have seen in the last two matches there against [Bayer] Leverkusen and Juventus that we have started really well and got early goals.

"We have shown we can defend well, with the midfielders and strikers also working really hard for the cause, so we know we must do that again for the second leg and we are confident that we can get to the final now."
