The 19-year-old former Le Havre striker, who arrived at Anfield alongside exciting compatriot Anthony Le Tallec, has already terrorised defences in his fleeting appearances for the club with a goal and two cleverly won penalties marking him out as a future star.

Houllier said: "Our fans have taken to Florent, maybe because he has similar qualities to Michael Owen. Florent has lightning pace and can make and score goals. He would have scored yesterday if it hadn't have been a penalty.

"But he's not the finished article by far. He has to learn more about movement, positioning and linking with other players.''
